You're invited to my education town hall!
Join me on Wednesday, September 18 at 5 p.m. to discuss the redesign of Indiana's high school diplomas.
Dear neighbor,
Last month, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) and State Board of Education (SBOE) announced the second draft of its proposal to redesign Indiana's high school diplomas. The official proposal has not been published, but the preliminary updates include three new diploma tracks students can choose. The new diploma requirements will start with the Class of 2029 (this academic year's eighth graders).
I’ve received an outpouring of concern from House District 9 parents and educators about the ongoing diploma redesign. LaPorte and Porter Counties are well known for their quality public schools that set our students up to be lifelong learners. The draft released last month includes increased academic rigor but could benefit from input to further refine external employment concerns and ensure that students are not prevented from changing their mind about their future path while still in high school.
As we wait for the SBOE and IDOE’s second public comment period to begin, State Sen. Rodney Pol and I are holding a town hall with local education stakeholders so our community can review the work done, share thoughts, ask questions and learn more about the updated proposal with stakeholders and education leadership. The town hall will take place at this time and location:
Wednesday, September 18 from 5-6:30 p.m. CT
Michigan City Council Chambers (100 East Michigan Boulevard, Michigan City, IN 46360)
Thank you for your feedback and involvement on this topic, and I hope to see you on Tuesday. As always, please reach out to my office at h9@iga.in.gov with any questions, feedback, or concerns.
In service,
Pat
